How sustainable is

Modal

?

Modal another type of rayon/viscose using beech trees with a similar production process as viscose. Most Modal is made in China. The Austrian company Lenzing, selling modal under the name Lenzing Modal® only uses trees from more sustainably harvested forests (PEFC certified) and employs an eco-friendly bleaching method. But Modal is produced by many other manufacturers who don’t necessarily use and sustainable processes and might not have a functioning waste water treatment system. A better choice to a similar material is Tencel/Lyocell from Lenzing.

Discouraged

Discouraged materials may be made from synthetic or non-renewable resources, and may be produced using methods that have a high environmental impact. While these materials may be less expensive or easier to work with than other options, they may not be the most sustainable or ethical choices for clothing production.
